It’s Going to Be Built! But How?

The traffic situation in Prague was getting worse in the 1960s. The main arteries, Na Příkopě and Wenceslas Square, were crowded with trams. According to a government resolution, mass transit was to be moved underground. In the first stage, a subsurface tram was to run from Hlavní nádraží railway station over Nusle Bridge to Pankrác. The excavation of the first station began in 1967. However, the subsurface tram concept had a number of flaws, mainly the need for entry ramps and the dependence on the surface traffic situation.
