Prague residents had to endure extensive use of land for construction, for example the layout of the tram tracks changed several times by the statue of St. Wenceslas. Instead of the domestically produced R1 cars, obsolete heavier Soviet E series cars were chosen for the Prague metro’s first line. This necessitated the insertion of a reinforcing grating in a critical place in the whole I. C structure – Nusle Bridge. Although in 1966 it was planned to start operations during 1970, the lack of experience with this type of construction work meant that the metro was not inaugurated until early May 1974.
