Five-car trains began to operate on the C line on 26 February 1979; this is the maximum length of trains that can be operated in the entire Prague metro network. At the end of 1980, the C line was extended: on 7 November, passengers took a ride on the line’s second section (II. C) to South Town. In 1984, the C line was extended under the River Vltava to Holešovice. Further construction in the northern direction was delayed for years by discussions about the direction of the route. The Nádraží Holešovice – Ládví metro section was finally put into operation in June 2004 (IV. C 1). Originally, the route was supposed to lead over a bridge (the Negrelli Viaduct), but in the end the variant with a tunnel under the river won out.
